My personal favourite out of the looks I created and the one I will be recreating when I go out for Halloween is the Sugar Skull makeup. When I was at Uni my housemate and I managed to do a Sugar skull look so I decided if we could do it then, when I had no idea about makeup, I can do it now. I did watch a couple of tutorials for inspo but the main one that I took inspo from was a Jamie G tutorial on sugar skull makeup. If you see her video, you will certainly see elements of it within my look. Let's get into it shall we.
The Tools
Really there isn't a whole lot that goes into creating this look. I used:
- NYX - Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation in Pale
- Nars Eye Pencil
- Huda Beauty - New Nude Palette
- Urban Decay Naked Cherry Palette
- Marc Jacobs Black Gel Liner
- Maybelline Gel Liner
- Nars Climax Mascara
- Eylure x Fleur De Force - Fleur Loves Lashes
That's it for makeup but you do need a shit ton of eye makeup brushes for liner and for blending the eye area. In total I used about 6-7 brushes which is both for eye liner and eyeshadow.
The Look
I started off the look by caking my face in foundation. I purchased the NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop foundation specifically for Halloween and I bought it in the palest shade possible which is really pale. I can't use face paint so this is my way of lightning my face. I have to say this isn't the best foundation, it is very thick and looks cakey which makes it perfect for Halloween but not every day life. I used quite a thick layer just to make sure my skin was evenly pale. This sets down so it is really matte, almost to the point where it sucks any ounce of moisture out of your skin. I would not recommend this foundation for anyone unless it is for Halloween.
The next step was to mark out the eyes, this is sort of down to personal preference. I like the eyes quite big but I have big eyes, some people might go smaller and that is fine. It really is up to you. I then used the Nars eyeshadow pencil to sketch out where I wanted my eyes to go out to so I had an idea when I was shading but it also wasn't too dark so I could blend it out if necessary. Any light pencil would do for this but it is important to give yourself an idea of the shape you want to create.
Once that was done, out came the eyeshadow and the mess that ensued. To start the eye shadowing, I went in with a primer to make it last as long as possible. I don't use a specific eye primer so I ended up using the concealer shade in The New Nude palette which was actually really good. Once I'd laid down this base, I then went in with Tickle which is a slightly rosey pink shade on the bulk of my eye and slightly around. I then blended this to death.
To build up a darkness I then went in with Tease which is a cool toned purple that is almost bruise like. I made sure to blend this out to the line I created with the Nars Pencil. It builds up a depth, just make sure to blend your life away. Once I was happy with that I then dipped into the Jaclyn Hill x Morphe palette as it has a black in it. I wanted the black to go around the edges to merge the Huda Beauty shadows with the edge I was about to paint around the eyes. If you do want to use black, just go careful because it is hard to blend once you've used too much so tap off the brush before you apply it.
After my hand felt strange from all of the blending, I then did the scary part, the eye circles. I like to go around the eye part with a black liner to make it easier to do the petals. To do this I used the Maybelline Gel Liner, a steady hand and a prayer to god. To be fair the petals hide a multitude of sins and I just used a wipe with the areas I wasn't happy with. I sketched out the line and hoped for the best. After I had adjusted the areas I didn't like and I drew the petals, it looked much better so don't be put off by it.
To draw the petals, I then used the Marc Jacobs Gel Liner as it is slightly easier to use than the Maybelline one with the brush. This takes patience and acceptance that it isn't going to be perfect. Be careful around your nose, that was the bit I struggled with the most. When I first created the look I used Tickle from the New Nude palette to colour the petals but it was a bit light so this time I went in with Drunk Dial from the Urban Decay Naked Cherry Palette which looked much better.
To top off the eye look, I used the Maybelline Liner to line my top lash line, applied a bit of mascara, some false lashes, the (Fleur De Force Fleur Loves lashes) and topped it off with a coat of mascara to blend the lashes together. That was not the end for my Maybelline liner, in fact it practically ended up all over my face.
I then blocked out my nose with the Maybelline liner. I actually drew an outline with the Marc Jacobs liner and then filled it in with the Maybelline one. I did two blocks on my nostrils like Jamie G but I actually did it differently the second time and did it on the front of my nose as I thought it looked better and I didn't like how I did it the first time. Plus I found it really hard not to smudge it around my nose so I think the front tip of my nose is a better option.
Once my nose was complete, I moved on to my mouth. A lot of people do skull teeth but I couldn't be bothered with that level of detail and it is made hard by the fact that I can't use face paint. Instead I went for a rag doll, stitches, kind of look like Jamie G. I started by lining my lips with the eyeliner, an incredibly odd sensation and then filled them in so they were all black. Surprisingly I don't own a black lipstick and I don't want to buy one. Anyway once that was done, I drew a line from the corner of my lips outwards and upwards; not really caring how neat it was, I mean it is Halloween, and then I drew lines which crossed this line which could either be stitches or teeth.
That is it, the entire makeup look. For the Halloween party I am going to, I will pair this with a skeleton bodysuit, jeans, over the knee boots and a red floral red headband. I am not overly good at makeup or dressing up but I am super excited about this look.
